The planet only has one major continent: Penate. Due to incessant rainfall, deserts are nonexistent and water is plentiful. Penate's people have largely adapted and thrived. Every single piece of technology is steam-powered, including computers and weapons. Not a single piece of technology runs out of juice. The abundance of energy has lessened the load on the population, but it has also fueled the many wars that have ravaged Penate.

The year is 1389, thirty-six years after the Steprose War. The treaty between the two major superpowers still holds, but just barely. Since the that time, few have explored the desolate no-man's land that occupies the middle of the continent. Organized crime rings use their influence to trade illegal goods and information to anyone with money. Warrior monks congregate in isolation, emerging from their home city only to recruit. Personal duels are all too common, and a guild offers the services of its professionals to perform duels on behalf of those that cannot fight.

Welcome to Penate.

Once in Povarovo

with Seth Maiden

Twenty-four hours a day, cycling around twenty-five tones per minute, the Russian station НЖТИ (known commonly as UVB-76) broadcasts its strange buzzing tone. At certain intervals, one of a few Russian voices replaces the buzzing. Since it began broadcasting in 1997, there have been proposals suggesting it is a "dead hand" signal, although its purpose remains unconfirmed. In this proposed answer, if something catastrophic interrupts the signal, such as a nuclear attack on Russia, it will trigger retaliatory attacks.

Two hours ago, the signal went silent.

American paramilitary officer Wynne and French operative Leclerc received the task of assembling a team and restoring the signal. While no attack has begun, both governments are concerned about the possibility of it being a dead hand signal. For her part, Wynne is unconcerned; the signal has been cut off in the past, and no nuclear attacks have occurred.

However, what lurks in that now derelict radio station makes nuclear winter seem insignificant. Wynne and Leclerc will soon discover that themselves.

Right In His Eyes

In the American Frontier, as civilization gains a foothold, rebellion ferments. Native tribes, outlaw factions, and good people looking to escape are all threatened by the looming monolith of the Easterners.

Many try to maintain a semblance of law (or at least, order), while others seek to keep the territory as wild as possible. Moral compasses clash in a series of tales that examine might vs. right, wilderness, vs. civilization, power vs. submission.

Left to his own devices, every man will do what is right in his eyes.
